[Encounter Spoilers] Overpopulated planet sterilization encounter suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi, first time poster here.

I just found a fun encounter in the game today, well, definitely not fun but you get what I'm saying. The leader of a colony contacted me and told me about how her colony suffers from severe overpopulation, but the colonists still continue to pump out babies despite lacking the resources to sustain them. She wanted me to bomb a nearby chemical plant so that the chemicals would enter the air and cause sterility in her population.

However, I have an alternate suggestion that I would like to see in the game if the devs like it. Instead of bombing a plant in the hopes of causing mass sterility, which may not work well or well enough, may work TOO well (what's the point in insuring survival if the colony is made completely sterile and dies off anyway?), and may cause unwanted side-effects, I would suggest establishing a birth limit (assuming they don't have one already) and leaving behind a small team of doctors along with a soldier escort team to perform vasectomies, hysterectomies, tubal ligation, et cetera whenever someone reaches or goes past the birth limit.

Depending on what the devs want, the leader could accept or decline this alternate solution. Maybe she accepts but offers less or no scrap, or maybe even more because she likes the plan better. Maybe she'll decline because she doesn't think the colonists will submit to involuntary sterilization, and the military escort will not be enough to enforce it anyway.

Also, it might be a good idea to have a blue option that allows me to consult a specialist on the possible effects of the chemicals, and/or consult a specialist on solutions used in the empire's obscure past.

Just some food for thought.

From what I've seen this is one of the darker events. No good option lore wise or mechanically if you get hit with this one. It really sets the mood even if the situation itself seems a little silly. I do like that your crew reacts to your choices. This particular event differs in that there is no specialist option. I had all 9 skills covered over 4 heroes when I got this last run, still no blue option. I like your idea of a counterproposal as a risky act and to add some type of blue option.

Speaking of specialist options I don't recall seeing one for assault or hacking yet but I hope to encounter them. Right now seems spying and science options come up more than the others but that could just be RNG.

I liked the situation..What a dark choice. I agree with GM Jake that a specialist option might make for a good alternative. A counter proposal would be a good option too!

I couldn't do it, even with the scrap...

Thanks so much for your comments on this event, and I'm happy that you're enjoying it. It is a very dark event and puts the player in a situation where they have to make a difficult choice. That is one of our goals for the events, putting the player in uncomfortable situations where they must make difficult, moral decisions. That said, we're not sadists, we swear!

Good point about how a plan to make the entire colony sterile might not be a perfect solution as it will prevent the colony from ever having children again -- something they will need to do if they wish to survive into the future. Seems we will have to give this event some more thought.

I think you might be onto something too when you suggest a possible alternate course of action for the crew. We will certainly think about that moving forward. Though, there are questions of game-play balancing that we have to consider as well -- as only a certain percentage of events will have specialist or risky choice options.

Also, I like your idea that the leader might alter the amount of her scrap reward.  Not just for this event but for possibly others. I believe we have some of that in there now in certain events -- bargaining and counterproposal making -- but it would be great to further explore it in the future. It lends more complexity and realism to the events, I think, which a good thing.

I'm happy you like that the crew reacts to the player's decisions in this event. That's sort of a newer idea we're working on as well -- crew reaction. We're not entirely sure how it will or should manifest itself, beyond a possible loss of resources, nor how often. But we're playing around with it!

Regarding specialist options, we do have events for hacking and combat. All I can say is...keep playing!

Happy that you like this event! Hope you're enjoying the others too!

Are you planning a crew mutiny if we play a cold and implacable Admiral Idaho? Sometimes you have to be that way to secure the future of the Empire! I've already lost commandos following a tough decision... TRAITORS!
